We travelled back in time to the 70s at Pennzoil presents Rock for Dimes Halifax!
On Friday, November 1, 2013, local amateur musicians blew the doors off the Cunard Centre competing for the title of "Halifax's Best" at Pennzoil presents Rock for Dimes Halifax. This was the eighth year for the fundraiser. Over $50,000 was raised, bringing close to $200,000, the total raised to date in Halifax at this annual event. This was the biggest and best Rock for Dimes to date! Congratulations to everyone involved.
Sophie's Choice, The Goldilocks Effect, Terminal Road, Red C, Dali Van Gogh and Project 501 competed, showing off their interpretation of the 1970s to judges Coast Arts and Food Editor Stephanie Johns, Q104’s Anna Zee, musician Rich Aucoin and Q104’s Tom B, who pulled double duty as judge and the evening’s MC.
Project 501 emerged victorious in a very close contest. Red C was honoured for raising the most money. Each band took home a prize from sponsor Long & McQuade for their unique musical contributions. Local MLAs and a crowd of close to 500 took in fantastic performances from all six bands.
This evening also saw a very special presentation. This year, Pennzoil partnered with March of Dimes Canada, and has donated $65,000, $15,000 of which will retrofit a vehicle. The recipients of the Pennzoil support are Tracy and Mark Lomond, a North Sydney family in desperate need of a modified van.
Mark has cerebral palsy and uses a motorized wheelchair for mobility. The family’s van had broken down, and Tracy has been frequently making the four-hour trip to Halifax for Mark’s medical appointments in a car that cannot accommodate his wheelchair. As a result, she has been carrying Mark to his appointments, and her mother needed to accompany her whenever the family left the house together.
“I was so excited and overwhelmed to learn that Mark and I were the recipients the generosity from Pennzoil, it’s going to change our lives,” says Tracy Lomond. “Just knowing we can be mobile and safe, go places, and travel back and forth without worrying – I can’t properly explain what a huge difference this will make,” she continues.
Vehicle modifications allow people living with disabilities the freedom of mobility, access and community participation that so many of us take for granted – but they can be prohibitively expensive, and out of reach for those like the Lomond family who are living with limited or fixed incomes.
Before applying to the Pennzoil Retrofit Vehicle Initiative, Tracy received funding from President’s Choice Children’s Charity and raised a significant amount through personal fundraising efforts. The retrofit donation will now allow her to obtain the modified van her family needs.
“We are so excited to help Mark and Tracy acquire their retrofitted vehicle, knowing we are helping to make their life a little easier,” says Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for March of Dimes Canada. “We are very grateful to Pennzoil for providing this generous donation.
“Freedom is a sentiment closely associated with the ability to drive an automobile. Yet, this freedom can be taken away if one has disabilities and cannot drive a standard automobile. Pennzoil supports organizations like March of Dimes Canada, which are dedicated to helping people with disabilities regain mobility and freedom,” says Bree Sandlin, Pennzoil Global Brand Manager.
Rock for Dimes Halifax benefits March of Dimes Canada's Conductive Education® (CE) Nova Scotia Program, an innovative program that blends elements of education and rehabilitation to improve the independence, mobility and confidence of children with disabilities, and has proven especially beneficial to children with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and developmental apraxia.
