Rock For Dimes Halifax

Country Rocked at the 10th Anniversary Celebration
of Rock for Dimes Halifax!

On Friday, October 30, 2015, Halifax's best corporate bands put on their cowboy boots and hats to battle for the title of "Halifax's Best" at Rock for Dimes Halifax, a battle of the bands fundraiser, raising over $30,000! Earlier in the month, both Mayor Mike Savage and Premier Stephen McNeil proclaimed November ‘March of Dimes Month’ in support of the event. The theme at the 10th anniversary fundraiser was Country Rocks, and included music from musicians like Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks and Johnny Cash.

Impulse, The Showcase Showdowns, Toy Shed, Gene featuring Jean, Terminal Road, Red C and Project 501 competed at the event, in front of judges Heartsparks music therapist Anna Plaskett, Anna Zee of Q104, Serge Samson of Music Nova Scotia and Q104’s Tom B, who pulled double duty as judge and the evening’s MC. It was a very close content, but Project 501 were declared the winners in front of a crowd of over 500.

Rock for Dimes Halifax benefits March of Dimes Canada's Conductive Education® (CE) Nova Scotia Program, an innovative program that blends elements of education and rehabilitation to improve the independence, mobility and confidence of children with disabilities, and has proven especially beneficial to children with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and developmental apraxia. In addition, funding will support a second Aphasia Camp for Atlantic Canadians living with the communication disability. A first camp was held in September with support from previous Rock for Dimes fundraisers.

AMTI recipientsThe evening also celebrated seven Nova Scotia residents who were the winners of March of Dimes' Assistive Mobile Technology Initiative (AMTI) that provides tablets (like an iPad or Galaxy tablet), custom apps and training to people with physical disabilities to help improve communication, independence and participation in their community. “This tablet is going to make my life a lot easier,” says Jacqueline Benedict, who is legally blind. “It will help me to read documents, send emails, complete educational tasks, and in general feel safer,” she continues.
